We continue to monitor the still evolving COVID-19 situation and government decisions that affect you and your practice. Late last week, the federal government proposed changes to the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) including an extension of the program and improved eligibility criteria. The following are the changes that will be made to CEWS, pending parliamentary approval:
- Extend CEWS until December 19th, 2020.
- Extend eligibility to employers with a revenue decline of less than 30 per cent and provide a gradually decreasing base subsidy to all qualifying employers.
- Introduce a top-up subsidy of up to an additional 25 per cent for employers that have been most adversely affected by the pandemic.
If implemented, these changes would allow all employers that have been affected by the COVID-19 crisis to access a base CEWS amount for active employees. Please note that the rate of the base CEWS will now vary depending on the level of revenue decline. For more information about the proposed changes please read the Department of Finance Backgrounder.
